Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman in Australia

Exactly a week ago, I was invited together with Sarah, Carl, Joriben and Mark to watch the special screening of the movie Australia.

I’ve seen the trailer when I was watching an MMFF movie last year and I was interested on what the movie was all about. I am happy upon seeing Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, two of the most popular Australian Hollywood actors together in this movie.

To be honest, I was expecting to see a movie focusing more on the love angle. Maybe its because of the trailer which shows a lot of intimate scenes. I am glad to find out that the movie also focuses on the love of a mother to her child.

The story starts with a little kid narrating about this beautiful girl named Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) who arrived from England and wants him to sell Faraway Downs, an Australian cattling station. She also suspected that her husband is cheating on her. The husband then sends a Drover (Hugh Jackman) to accompany Lady Sarah Ashley. There is this funny scene wherein she sees running kangaroos for the first time then something happened LOL.

When she finally stepped in Faraway Downs, she finds her husband lying on the table dead. He was murdered and Neil Fletcher, the cattle store manager is accusing King George, an Aborginal elder with magic powers is the culprit. She originally wanted to sell the place, but later on changed her mind when she witnessed how Fletcher abused an  Half Caucasian – Aborginal child named Nullah.

As a childless woman, Lady Sarah Ashley was captivated with the little boy. She comforted him by singing “Somewhere over the rainbow” when his mother died. The two later on developed a mother-son relationship and made each other happy. The little boy called her “Miss Boss”.

On their journey led by the drover wherein they needed to drive more than a thousand head of cattles across Australia, Miss Boss later on finds  herself falling deeply in love with the drover. The drover later on narrated that he was married once, but his Aborginal wife died because of tubercolosis and the hospital refused to accept her because of her race.

In the movie, you will witness the discrimination to the Aborgines by the white people. I also found out that during the 1930’s interracial marriages is not permitted in Australia.

With an adopted son and a new partner, Miss Boss finally finds happiness with her new family. The three of them together with their friends were happy living in the Faraway Downs until the little boy was captured and joined the other kids and the drover left her when they had a little misunderstanding.

Ok. I’m almost spilling the whole story LOL

What are lessons that I’ve learned from the movie?

1.       Australia is such a wonderful country. I am now interested in learning more about their culture and people.

2.       Do not be afraid to dream. Having an ambition can lead you to success. I realized this on one of the drover’s emo scenes.

3.       The love of a mother is the greatest love of all.

4.       Take risks.

5.       Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman are good Australian actors. I would like to see them in a movie again soon.

6.       Baz Luhrmann, the writer and director of the fillm is also the guy behind the movies Romeo & Juliet and Moulin Rouge!

I am giving this movie my two thumbs up!

AUSTRALIA Starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman will be shown at your favorite cinemas starting on January 28, 2009.

I have seen “Australia” a few days after it arrived in the UK. I read the reviews and the negative approach of the USA and could not believe that theyhad actually seen the same film I had seen. I went in with an open mind and sat down waiting heart a flutter of course for Hugh Jackman.

The film should have been in the nomminations and Hugh should also had an nomination. I loved the stories which followed and blended so well. The action, adventure, thrills, love, romance and passion and special effects were first rate.

When the film finally ended I could not believe that nearly three hours of my life had been so happily spent and yet I was sure it could not have been that long. Hugh as ever was mor ethan first class and well partnered with Nicol Kidman and they had a stella support from Devid Wneham, Bryan Brown and a supberb Brandon. I will get the DVD as soon as it comes out and I willbe watching this film more than once.

The USA did not see the film the same way as the rest of the world I am so glad the rest of the world got it right because I am with them.

Hope you get that 2nd place for ratings

    @Azrael – Thanks for the invite! 🙂

@Rina – Thanks for appreciating my review. I have a big crush on Hugh Jackman now because of this movie LOL

@Anne Hedley – I am also wondering why there’s a lot of negative reviews among the US moviegoers. I actually appreciate the efforts of the writer/director for this movie. I dunno… but I can feel that the movie is made of love and I don’t regret the fact that I spent almost three hours of my life sitting and watching the movie. 🙂

Nice review. I haven’t seen it yet. I was such a big fan of Moulin Rouge and I’m a little afraid this won’t be as good, so I’ve been avoiding watching it, if that makes sense.
