They may not have discovered life on Mars, but astronomers have recently found a distant planet with water in its atmosphere. Understandably the science community is pretty excited by this news, though the planet is still fairly inhospitable to life.
If little green men do decide to arrive in their droves, there’s plenty of space inspired fashion for them to choose from. Over the past few years, high end fashion designers, from McQueen to Wang, have given out-of-this-world fashion pride of place on the runway.
Space inspired fashion is all about sharp angles, striking patterns, and skin tight pieces (we have Star Trek to thank for that). McQueen’s 2010 collection is one of the most famous examples of space inspired fashion, with peculiar silhouettes, digital prints and downright bizarre materials creating a real otherworldly effect, including crab-claw style high heels.
Obviously metallic materials are an important component for any space inspired look, but go easy on them. A pair of metallic leggings may look great with the right styling but can easily look over the top. Try a pair of gold-look skinny jeans and a simple black top, complete with huge shoulder pads.
Don’t forget about shoes! Any self-respecting space explorer would love a pair of Rocket Dog boots, but if you’re off on a glam night out, look out for shoes made from a high shine material, such as patent leather. Anything with metal detailing on it will complete an outfit. Or you could come over all Barbarella and wear a pair of thigh high latex boots, if you think you can pull it off.
Finally, remember your makeup. There’s no point in wearing a striking, space inspired outfit if you’re going for a natural palette. Paint your nails in a metallic shade, and go crazy with the eyeshadow. Think Lady Gaga in her Poker Face video. You don’t want to be subtle; you want to be out of this world.
